Out shopping.

Those days when you know that you need to do other stuff you tend to just go and do nothing. Our day doing nothing was filled with doing something, named shopping in Örebro. Martin needed to return a couple of jeans that didn´t live up to what was promised of them and we checked out IKEA for some frames. In the end we didn´t return with any frames but coffee- glases and scented candles. Now back home Martin is playing Grand Theft Auto and me are blogging, soon to edit some more photos from the shoot earlier this week. Have a great weekend! My new little workspace.

A couple of weeks ago Martin and I packed ourself into my cute little Peugeot and went to Örebro and IKEA. All non-Swedes out there, you know what IKEA is right? Well, if you don’t, google it. Anyway, we headed for IKEA to get ourself a little workspace. I bought both the furniture for the workspace but also an external bigger screen then my little Macbook have and it feels so great! I am extra happy today when working on some photobooks for Christmas. You really need that big screen then. I want to wish you all a great and happy week! My week holds work and evenings spent preparing for Christmas and watching the Glades. Exploring Bergslagen – Mossgruvan

Me and Martin has been out and about today, doing some urban exploration. The notion of urban exploration might be new to someone but shortly it means, to explore a man-made object, often ruins or abandoned areas. This is a newly found interest of mine due to my photo project and I have posted posts before – Stripa Mossgruvan is a former mining village in the municipality of Ljusnarsberg in Västmanland (County of Örebro). I live in the county, so have about an hour by car to get to the two old mines in Mossgruvan, Sköttgruvan and Mossgruvan- mines. The two mines where found in the 1870´s and run to 1972, first started by SKF and culminating inbetween the years 56 to 58 (post-war times), by then owned by Hofors Bruk. Due to the prices of iron/ and the stone on the world market, the ability for Mossgruvan to compete vanished and the mine closed down by 72. The area is nostalgic in so many was. The buildings in the village are a remaining of the …

The old mine Stripa in Bergslagen – Sweden

In the Instagram Travel Thursday post this week I wrote a question in the end of where to go for a short trip within 300 km from Bergslagen if me and boyf. wanted to go somewhere during this weekend. I think I got only one suggestion, and that is probably just because this guy is from the area and know what is within 300km from Bergslagen. Thanks to Replicant Core for suggesting Visingsö even if we ended up somewhere else.. Rep. Core is a blogger that lives in Örebro and comment frequently on my photos. Where did we end up then? The old mine of Stripa, Stripa gruva, is a mine in Bergslagen close to Lindesberg. It is really well preserved and a dream for photographers that loves history, rusty stuff and buildings. So Rep. Core, maybe this is something for you instead? Basic knowledge For 60 sek (around 10 dollars) you get a guided tour (ours where for 3 hours!) where the guide has a lot of knowledge of the area. The tour takes place …

Evening by a sea with friends.

After the master thesis presentation the 30th of may, we went to a place in Örebro close to Naturens hus. Some had a sallad, some had a barbeque. Photos with little or no saturation. First three photos is taken by Ben Crisp and edited by me. Rest taken by me and edited by me. All taken with my Canon 5D Mark iii, with 24-105 mm Canon lens, and edited in Lightroom. Katarina

Masterthesis: The Construction of Nature and Wilderness

Giving you my second part of my masterthesis while I am at a graduation celebration for a relative to Martin in Eksjö Sweden. Katarina The Construction of Nature and Wilderness Viewed as strong and pristine, nature has always been there for human kind. A view that journalists deal with every day, constructed a long time ago with the creation of the first national park in the United States. From one of many park benches on the Malecón, a long stretch of parks famous for it´s fantastic view and visited by many tourists, Barbara Fraser ponders about the philosophical side of nature “I think this whole concept of wilderness of pristine nature is a romantic concept that doesn´t always fit reality” she begins. In United States there is a whole movement to preserve wilderness even in areas that where not originally wilderness, Fraser continues.“Yosemite national park which was created, which is sort of the iconic park, was created by moving indigenous people out of that area so that the park could be created.” she says. To listen …

IN THE FOOTSTEP OF CLIMATE CHANGE – ONE LARGE CITY, ONE HUGE CONTRAST

Forgot to publish this in March, just published the photostory of Independencia, but I also wrote a feature with pictures about the water situation in Lima and Peru. Hope you find it interesting! Arriving in Lima, the humid heated city air hit you straight in the face at Jorge Chavez airport, making you realize that you are no longer in a cold country of zero degrees and misty surroundings of Arlanda airport, Stockholm. Even though there are differences, Sweden and Lima share the common threat, a changing climate and what that entail. Walking the streets of a mega city is so much different from being in small country like Sweden, where there is no mega city as far as the eye can reach. In Lima 8,5 million (figure from 2007) people live their everyday life, the second biggest desert city next to Kairo. But the thing special about Lima, is the climate. The humid foggy air definitively makes a difference, something you notice, this and the fact that it is not as warm as you …

My friend and Media Wizard, Anders Hallberg and the Occupy Central Movement

This post will be in English due to that Anders and me, are students in the same program, Journalism Connected in Örebro University in Sweden. I wan´t to tell a story about Anders, a crazy but always helpful media and technology person that helps me through my difficult times in Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, Indesign you name it. He is also the one making my stay in Peru easier through always bringing his laptop to lectures so I can participate through Skype AND AND AND recording the ones that I can not participate on, which basically is every morning due to the time difference. These nice gestures maybe seem to pass unnoticed, but they are not going to longer. Anders is as Rime going to do a documentary for his final thesis and is also going to crowd-fund this. (GO TO THE CROWD-FUNDING SITE RIGHT NOW.) But Anders, next to Rime that is staying in Europe, are going for Hongkong to report on the Occupy Central Movement. Have you heard of this weird name before (?!), …

THE GREEN JOBS MOVEMENT – A SALVATION OR A MYTH?

Originally published in Type Magazine, Örebro University. New technologies are often presented and of many “important” people out there as the ultimate solution to climate change. Certainly there is something romantic about the idea that we can consume and get rid of the problem where consumption, at the same time as it “saves the environment”, leads to more jobs in a world that is struggling with high unemployment rates and increasing social inequality. World Economic Forum did a survey with its members about the next 12-18 months and its challenges, which resulted in the Top Ten Trends for 2014 in which persistent structural unemployment ranked third and inaction on climate change fifth among very varied challenges like megacities, conflicts in Africa and the Middle East and the spread of misinformation on the web. Loud and clear it is put out there that unemployment is seen by many as one of the biggest challenges for the closest future where Europeans and North Americans are the ones pointing it out most of all. In Europe we are …

Support a documentary about Syrian refugees in Europe!

My classmate Rime is doing a documentary about Syrian refugees in Europe and is going to crowdfund it, which means funding by givers. Click on this link and read about the project and if you like it, give a dollar or two. The more the merrier! It is important to highlight the refugees and their situation but also, how governments is handling it and that is why I think you should do as I did and support it. The giving part is very easy. This is Rime, my classmate and below you can read and watch her earlier work to make up your own mind. THE GREEN JOBS MOVEMENT – A SALVATION OR A MYTH?

New article by me published about the Green Jobs movement on Type Magazine, our student newspaper at the University of Örebro. READ IT HERE! –  in English. The article will later on be added to the archive and portfolio here on this blog. Happy reading, Katarina Photos of the beautiful windmills close to Ludvika here in Sweden. Took the photos for the article with my Canon 5D and my 24-105mm lens. When doing so I really wished that I owned a telescope-lens!

Grythyttans Brewery and the Indian Pale Ale

originally published on Type Magazine, Örebro University. The 20th of January Systembolagets released their sales figures for 2013, and the Swedish stronger beers are one of the winners, increasing with 0,8 % percent during the year even though a lot of people also go abroad to buy their alcohol due to the high alcohol-taxes in Sweden. The losers are ciders and strong wines, among others, actually having a decreasing sale. A trend of microbreweries that started a long time ago in the US have finally come to Sweden. Sweden had about 20 breweries in the early 90s compared to the later part of the 19th century when it were more than 500 breweries existing in Sweden. Now we have around 70-80 breweries and emerging, some numbers saying around 100 breweries.

Concerning the Weather

/Katarina It may not be obvious to everyone, but there is no snow. The weather in Sweden has been uncommonly mild during December, even past New Year’s Eve. But is this the calm before the storm? The 6th of December 2013 several parts of Skåne where flooded due to high seawater levels. Krisinformation.se, the webpage providing important information during a crisis, stated that municipalities warned house owners about water in cellars. Several media, among those SVT, reported of water filling the streets of Malmö, Helsingborg and other cities. Hallandsposten reported the same day that due to the river Nissan and its high water levels the municipality of Halmstad warned their inhabitants of the risk of walking and biking paths being covered with water and …

At the same time, the storm Sven entered. Since then the mild December climate of 2013 continues and the weather seems uncommonly calm this time of year. But the risk of weather abnormalities such as storms and floodings lingers around the …

On the Road to a Healthier Planet and Public

A more frequent, faster and less costly bus system – not more cars and roads- is the solution for the traveling demands of the future of Örebro. The most efficient way of moving a large number of people ought to be public transport. But why are public buses not working efficiently enough throughout the county, even in 2013? Every day hopping on and off the bus on the way to the University in Örebro, every day disappointed that the best way to travel takes 3-4 hours of the time that could have been spent better. Every month, when renewing the commuter pass it dawns: almost 1500 SEK poorer per month because of making the choice to live on the countryside. Express buses do exist, but they only run a couple of times per day, limiting the life of a long distance day traveller enormously. Every now and then, taking the car because of the poor system, the massive traffic during rush hour in Örebro becomes evident. The traffic jam mostly exists within the city, but …
