3 restaurants in Lima- Astrid y Gaston, La Mar and Tr3s Cocina Peruana

Here are 3 restaurant tips from Lima Peru (higher class). I have wrote and shown picture from two of them before, Astrid y Gaston and La Mar. Astrid y Gaston – Casa Moreyra To make a reservation for the tasting menu, use the online reservation. Check out the webpage for a map to the restaurant. The number one restaurant in Lima Peru spells Astrid y Gaston. This is the restaurant I have written severals times about and also the restaurant my boyfriend had a three months intership at. This restaurant serves traditional Peruvian cusine with a modern twist. The entire family had dinner there once and then had the 27 course tasting menu. The food is served on for the occasion and menu special designed china that is formed as for example a snake or tree. Cost is around 1500 SEK per person, around 180 dollars depending on the exchange rate. This is in European measures a very priceworthy meal since this includes wine and high class food. If you know that you are heading …

Aquas Calientes – the ”Machu Picchu town”

Everybody wants to go to Machu Picchu once in their life, right? Martin and I traveled there last year and to get to Machu Picchu we traveled by train from Cusco, probably one of the most common ways, a trainride that takes around 3-4 hours. We just headed for Machu Picchu over the day but it is possible to stay in the nearby village where the train arrives, Aguas Calientes, ”Hot Springs” in Spanish. When I say village, I mean village. Basically it is just a number of houses caught inbetween the Andes a 20 minuter busride from Machu Picchu. This village is also where the buses leave from heading for Machu Picchu. Here you can: Buy your entrence- tickets for Machu Picchu (today price april 2015, 126 sol including the top that has a regulated number of visitors per day, Huayna Picchu, 150 sol) Buy the bus tickets for the 20 minute ride from the village to Machu Picchu (around 10 dollars, only found price in dollars) Stay over night, eat, shop handicraft and more …

The view of Lima.

When writing the guest post on Machu Picchu for Resia I went through the archive of photos from Peru. Checking out my shots from Lima I found some not earlier releast photos of the view from Miraflores/Barranco down on the below beach. What a view huh? I was probably thinking that I was saving them for later and then forget about them. That´s life huh!?:) Are at the moment planning some post about trips I made earlier in life as London in 1997, haha, the photos are developed and not digitial (smiling when thinking about it) and also some more about thailand (with iPhone 3) but also Madrid and Turkey. Have a lot in the archive and just need to write them. But for this weeks contributions to the travelpart of this blog I give you the view from Barranco in Lima. Lima is a stunning city in so many ways. The fog enhances the view (don´t you think)? Well, most people don´t like the fog of Lima but I must say that I did. …

10 things to do in Lima- My guide to Lima

It took me a little longer than expected but here are my tips for a good TIME (with camera) in Lima using the TIME-list and adding my own tips.   1-4. Activities worth doing 1. Go to a fruitmarket. Close to where we lived in the area Los Olivos we had a market, I called it a fruit market but they sold both fruit, meat and fish. I went to this market several times and the photo possibilities are endless. So much fruit, so much color and so much fun. You get to the market in Los Olivos by first taking the Metropolitano (the fast transfer bus system with few lines in Lima) and then a cab or the local bus. The local bus system is special and you need to ask the locals about which number or bus to take. Besides the photo possibilities you also find an amazing range of fruit and vegetables. A lot of the fruit I was not familiar to before and not all of us know them. Fruits/vegetables like Maracuya …

10 things to do in Lima – post 7- Larcomar

The seventh post in my series inspired by the Times list, 10 things to do in Lima, Larcomar.   First arriving in Larcomar you get fairly amazed. It is a bit special, this outdoor shopping area/ with a view over the ocean. Basic knowledge Situated in Miraflores on the Malecon, Larcomar is easily accessible. The area has restaurants like Tanta but also Pizza Hut or other fast food opportunities, even Peruvian fast food Ceviche as well as bowling, cinema and extensive shopping opportunities. It is fairly new and feels overall fresh. Me and Martin tried both the fast food and the Tanta restaurant and I really agree with the Tanta concept, which is one of Gastons concepts of Peruivian and western fusion. Shopping Larcomar has a big variety of shopping, though very much American or non Peruvian brands. One of my favorite Peruvian stores where Mentha & Chocolate where I bought some clothes during my stay and this clothes where found here in Larcomar. See my photo of the clothes on Instagram. During our stay in …

10 things to do in Lima- Post 5- Parque de la Reserva – the water park.

Number 10 on the times list and post 5- The Magic Water Circuit or Parque de la Reserva in Lima. From times article- ”The Magic Water Circuit (Circuito Mágico del Agua) is the city’s newest attraction, and locals and tourists agree it’s surprisingly awesome. Check it out for yourself.” 1. Magic Water Circuit Parque de la Reserva, Block 5 of Av. Petit Thouars, Lima, Peru Above used links are from the Time article. Basic knowledge Cost: $1.50. Opening hours: The fountains are open Wednesday through Sunday, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. The park is a huge garden with fountains, train, a tunnel, art exhibitions and so forth. It is situated in downtown Lima, close to the tourism quarters. To get here you can walk, take the bus (the Metropolitano and jump of by the Estadio Nacional, the football stadium). It is next to the arena so there will be no problem finding the place. A good tip that Times give here is to go after the sun has set to see the water show. So did I. For …

GUEST POST: LIMA, “SHE STUNNED ME.”- on TERENCE S JONES – A GUY WITH A CAMERA

Go to the post and look at a collection of all photos from my Lima visit. Terrence is a professional photographer, working at different projects. He runs the blog Terrence Jones- A guy with a camera as a side project. Take a look at his blog and projects while your at it! Katarina   Lima, “she stunned me.” by Katarina Wohlfahrt.  A few weeks ago I came across Katarina’s blog, which is a very nice mix of writing and photography. After spending quite some time on her blog I asked her whether she would be interested in doing a guest post and she agreed. So enjoy her story of Lima – and don’t forget to check out her blog. — TSJ It is interesting how hard it is to be a photographer sometimes. I mean, when it comes to choosing among the photos you have taken. Most times I just bring them all.   Terence, or for you who know him as “a guy with a camera”, asked me if I couldn´t do a guestpost on his …

Peru: On the road to Machu Picchu

I think I have to tell this story more than once. I am exhausted after a day at Machu Picchu, why I start with photos from the road to Machu Picchu and continue with more later. It is a complicated story of cost and how we got there, but basically you have to pay the cab to the trainstation, the train, the fee for entering Machu Picchu, the bus from the little village Machu Picchu up to the old city and also a guide. Overall I think me and Martin spend 3000 sek, at least, which is around 400-500 dollars depending. But the trainride, oh the trainride was worth it alone. Enjoy the pictures. They are from the trainride and from the village Machu Picchu, which is named Agua Caliente. They have hot springs there, why the name. A hot tip if deciding to travel the Andes, bring a raincoat. I did, never regreted that 🙂 Katarina As always taken with my Canon 5D Mark iii, 24-105 mm Canon lens and edited in lightroom.     …

Arrived in Cusco- checked in at Eco Inn Cusco

This morning we arrived in Cusco. The air feels a bit heavy from the hight so we wen´t directly to the hotel to check in. At first glans, Cusco Inn where we are staying looks amazing. We where nicely informed at the hotel lobby that since we stayed so long in Peru (more than 60 days) we now have to pay taxes, adding 15 dollars a day to the hotel bill, ending up in around 2100 sek for 3 nights. Not that much. We choose this hotel over hostels since we wanted a bit higher standard. In the rooms you are informed that you if you care about environment only should ask for change of sheets when needed. Kind of a western touch I guess. Since we are only staying three nights, this certainly won´t be needed. The planeride to Cusco was a bit bumpy I might add and also feel a little planesick. Think it is a distant cousin feeling to the bumpy ride over the Nasca lines. We took a cab from the …

Astrid y Gaston- Casa Moreyra

Finally we wen´t for dinner at Astrid y Gaston, the restaurant Martin has been working on for two months. And what a restaurant. It is the best I ever had. History Astrid y Gaston is the worlds 18th best restaurant and have newly updated from it´s old quarters in Miraflores and are situated in San Isidro, the business quarters of Lima. The name Astrid y Gaston, means what it is saying, Astrid and Gaston. Gaston is Perus famous chef that have given the Peruvian cuisine world status, and Astrid is his wife. The house, is of old colonial style which where owned by the people who owned San Isidro, and the name is Casa Hasienda Moreyra. The food There is four different kitchens and three restaurant within Casa Moreyra. We had the tasting menu of 27 courses, that take the customer all over Peru´s different regions (the coast, the mountains and the jungle) and their respective cuisine. It is an extraordinary experience where the food is perfect and well thought true. It is well balanced …

IN THE FOOTSTEP OF CLIMATE CHANGE – ONE LARGE CITY, ONE HUGE CONTRAST

Forgot to publish this in March, just published the photostory of Independencia, but I also wrote a feature with pictures about the water situation in Lima and Peru. Hope you find it interesting! Arriving in Lima, the humid heated city air hit you straight in the face at Jorge Chavez airport, making you realize that you are no longer in a cold country of zero degrees and misty surroundings of Arlanda airport, Stockholm. Even though there are differences, Sweden and Lima share the common threat, a changing climate and what that entail. Walking the streets of a mega city is so much different from being in small country like Sweden, where there is no mega city as far as the eye can reach. In Lima 8,5 million (figure from 2007) people live their everyday life, the second biggest desert city next to Kairo. But the thing special about Lima, is the climate. The humid foggy air definitively makes a difference, something you notice, this and the fact that it is not as warm as you …

Peru: Go to Huacca China- a oasis outside Ica

It is amazing! As one part of last weekend when we traveled we wen´t to Huacca China, a backpackers paradise next to Ica. I might have told you before that I love the desert, but I love love love, the desert. It is so distant from what I am used to. Okay, I acknowledge that the sand itself is a bit tricky to like. It is everywhere, and I mean everywhere. It almost got into my Canon 5D as well after Martin carried the camera to the top of one of the sand dunes. Due to it is a travel paradise, you can get american or continental breakfast, which feels like a gift send from above when eating food you are not used to for over two months. Sometimes you miss the simple, and it is often the food. A critique not to Huacca China people but the people who travel there. Don´t throw trash in the sand dunes, bring it with you down for god´s sake. Pollution is already a problem and trash looks so awful. …

Thousands of dolphins stranded and dead in Peru two years ago- remains a mystery?

A couple of years ago thousands of dolphins stranded and died on the coast of Peru and the reason was and remain a mystery. Interviewing Barbara Fraser, environmental reporter in Peru for my thesis, she mentioned the dolphins during the interview, and said that this might remain a mystery. I remember reading about it in a short notice in a Swedish newspaper when it happened, but nothing more than that. Barbara, on the other hand, have written an excellent article to read to be enlightened in the subject. It can be read here. The marine eco system are easily forgotten, might be since we are land animals ourself. But it is important that every now and then think about the seas and what we are doing to them as fishing and oil-drilling. The latter could be the reason to the mass death of the dolphins since they easily get disoriented by sounds. It could also be an enhancement of chemicals, due to the fact that the dolphins are high in the foodchain and by this …

The Nazca lines

Early Sunday morning we wen´t to Nazca. It was an adventure of a lifetime I never forget, mostly due to that I was so close of throwing up on the plane but also that I discovered that what everyone is talking about is true. There is a lot of lines and you can see them. It is mysterious and cool. Take off was okay. Smaller plane means more bumps and jumps, but I was fine. They asked if everybody where ok and at first I had no clue why. A little later I got to find out why. Everytime we passed an important figure they tipped the plane first to the left and then to the right so everybody could see them. This was why you got sick. The Asian girl in front of Martin actually did throw up, not so funny. I had to fight it, but survived even if I thanked God when I was back on ground. Before the trip I longed for it since I really enjoy the desert. It was so …
