3 restaurants in Lima- Astrid y Gaston, La Mar and Tr3s Cocina Peruana

Here are 3 restaurant tips from Lima Peru (higher class). I have wrote and shown picture from two of them before, Astrid y Gaston and La Mar. Astrid y Gaston – Casa Moreyra To make a reservation for the tasting menu, use the online reservation. Check out the webpage for a map to the restaurant. The number one restaurant in Lima Peru spells Astrid y Gaston. This is the restaurant I have written severals times about and also the restaurant my boyfriend had a three months intership at. This restaurant serves traditional Peruvian cusine with a modern twist. The entire family had dinner there once and then had the 27 course tasting menu. The food is served on for the occasion and menu special designed china that is formed as for example a snake or tree. Cost is around 1500 SEK per person, around 180 dollars depending on the exchange rate. This is in European measures a very priceworthy meal since this includes wine and high class food. If you know that you are heading …

10 things to do in Lima- My guide to Lima

It took me a little longer than expected but here are my tips for a good TIME (with camera) in Lima using the TIME-list and adding my own tips.   1-4. Activities worth doing 1. Go to a fruitmarket. Close to where we lived in the area Los Olivos we had a market, I called it a fruit market but they sold both fruit, meat and fish. I went to this market several times and the photo possibilities are endless. So much fruit, so much color and so much fun. You get to the market in Los Olivos by first taking the Metropolitano (the fast transfer bus system with few lines in Lima) and then a cab or the local bus. The local bus system is special and you need to ask the locals about which number or bus to take. Besides the photo possibilities you also find an amazing range of fruit and vegetables. A lot of the fruit I was not familiar to before and not all of us know them. Fruits/vegetables like Maracuya …

Peru: On the road to Machu Picchu

I think I have to tell this story more than once. I am exhausted after a day at Machu Picchu, why I start with photos from the road to Machu Picchu and continue with more later. It is a complicated story of cost and how we got there, but basically you have to pay the cab to the trainstation, the train, the fee for entering Machu Picchu, the bus from the little village Machu Picchu up to the old city and also a guide. Overall I think me and Martin spend 3000 sek, at least, which is around 400-500 dollars depending. But the trainride, oh the trainride was worth it alone. Enjoy the pictures. They are from the trainride and from the village Machu Picchu, which is named Agua Caliente. They have hot springs there, why the name. A hot tip if deciding to travel the Andes, bring a raincoat. I did, never regreted that 🙂 Katarina As always taken with my Canon 5D Mark iii, 24-105 mm Canon lens and edited in lightroom.     …

IN THE FOOTSTEP OF CLIMATE CHANGE – ONE LARGE CITY, ONE HUGE CONTRAST

Forgot to publish this in March, just published the photostory of Independencia, but I also wrote a feature with pictures about the water situation in Lima and Peru. Hope you find it interesting! Arriving in Lima, the humid heated city air hit you straight in the face at Jorge Chavez airport, making you realize that you are no longer in a cold country of zero degrees and misty surroundings of Arlanda airport, Stockholm. Even though there are differences, Sweden and Lima share the common threat, a changing climate and what that entail. Walking the streets of a mega city is so much different from being in small country like Sweden, where there is no mega city as far as the eye can reach. In Lima 8,5 million (figure from 2007) people live their everyday life, the second biggest desert city next to Kairo. But the thing special about Lima, is the climate. The humid foggy air definitively makes a difference, something you notice, this and the fact that it is not as warm as you …

Peru: Go to Huacca China- a oasis outside Ica

It is amazing! As one part of last weekend when we traveled we wen´t to Huacca China, a backpackers paradise next to Ica. I might have told you before that I love the desert, but I love love love, the desert. It is so distant from what I am used to. Okay, I acknowledge that the sand itself is a bit tricky to like. It is everywhere, and I mean everywhere. It almost got into my Canon 5D as well after Martin carried the camera to the top of one of the sand dunes. Due to it is a travel paradise, you can get american or continental breakfast, which feels like a gift send from above when eating food you are not used to for over two months. Sometimes you miss the simple, and it is often the food. A critique not to Huacca China people but the people who travel there. Don´t throw trash in the sand dunes, bring it with you down for god´s sake. Pollution is already a problem and trash looks so awful. …

The Nazca lines

Early Sunday morning we wen´t to Nazca. It was an adventure of a lifetime I never forget, mostly due to that I was so close of throwing up on the plane but also that I discovered that what everyone is talking about is true. There is a lot of lines and you can see them. It is mysterious and cool. Take off was okay. Smaller plane means more bumps and jumps, but I was fine. They asked if everybody where ok and at first I had no clue why. A little later I got to find out why. Everytime we passed an important figure they tipped the plane first to the left and then to the right so everybody could see them. This was why you got sick. The Asian girl in front of Martin actually did throw up, not so funny. I had to fight it, but survived even if I thanked God when I was back on ground. Before the trip I longed for it since I really enjoy the desert. It was so …

Glad Påsk- Happy easter everybody!

This is my second time I´m celebrating easter out of Sweden. I have also celebrated it in Greece with my relatives before. In Greece we visited neighbours and grilled a whole lamb in the garden, that is about as much I can remember. This was in 2008. In Peru I´ve learned some more. Thursday me, Elia and Robert went to the museum of gold in Lima. That was crazy, but photos weren´t allowed. Going how we passed plaza de armas, with the though of looking on some artisans and having a bite to eat. This was what we call Skärtorsdagen in Sweden, Jueves Santo in Spanishs and in English it is the Maundy Thursday. A pitcure says more than a thousand words, yes, but in this case it displays thousands of people in Lima, following the tradition this day of visiting six churches making it impossible for us to enter the center. Roberto never found a parking spot, but had to guard the car while we where eating.   This is the cathedral in …

10 things to do in Lima- Post 2- El Malecón, Miraflores

As you who follow me know, I have hanged around quite a bit in Miraflores and you may have also seen a lot of photos of a beach from up above and fantastic views over the city. This is basically what El Malecón is. A giant photo-opportunity. Basic knowledge It is a 6 mile stretch of green spaces, gardens and parks, where the best thing you can do is kiss your partner in the Parque de la Amor and watch the fantastic view. The Time list of course suggest other stuff to do as jogging, nothing I would ever do even if they payed me. A good idea that Time do point out is the possibility to rent a bike for a day. Something I haven´t done, but something smart since the stretch is so long. Those akin legs of a traveler needs som rest to. If you are not so in to bikes, maybe you like skating? 1. 10 things to do in Lima – Post 1- Pucllana Temple

Before going out this Monday me and Martin wanted to do some touristy stuff. Thats when we googled the amazing words ”10 things to do in Lima”. We ended up with the Time list where Time listed this exactly.  The list  is found here. I have been in Lima for a while and decided after reading it, to write a post about what to do, since the different stuff listed by time, isn´t all that hot. Have they even been here or have they just googled and put a list together, I ask myself. No kidding aside, maybe I am a bit hard on Time, but I will try to go through the list since I am already here and also add to the different posts on what Time have already written. Just for fun. Please tag along! I will then later end with a list of my own. 10 things to do in Lima- MY LIST. I won´t do the time list in chronological order, just so you know since I already visited a …

Out on the town with chefs of Astrid y Gaston- Lima- Peru

This post is in Swedish- I´m thinking of switching to English since it takes to much time to write in both languages, but haven´t decided yet. I have almost more international readers, why the thought is legit.

Lima- the city of love? photos from Larcomar- Miraflores

Typ ”men at work”.

The restaurant La Mar

Yesterday we wen´t to the restaurant La Mar in Miraflores (another of Gastons restaurants) with Martin chef friends Ruben, José Luis and Monica. Fabulous food. Amazing. The best. And that is an understatement. I also bought a book, one of Gastons book about streetfood in Peru, aka the normal food. Afterwards we walked around in China Town, another part of Lima and yet again I will let the photos speak for themselves. Katarina Taken with the Canon 5D, ed in Lightroom.

A bunch of ladies going to afternoon tea.

Photostory Independecia

Originally published at Type Magazine, our student newspaper.   Around 1950s the migration from the countryside into Lima began, because of the emergence of the industry in the capital of Peru. From the need for own ground and houses, a community for residence where started which later also gave life to this district, Independencia. There are four or five districts limiting to Independencia, Los Olivos, Comas, San Juan de Lurigancho, Rimac and a small area are limiting to San Martin de Porres. In Los Olivos, one of the Districts limiting to Independencia, a fruitmarket is being held where fruits, not so common in Sweden can be bought on a regular basis. Avenue Tupac Amaru is an important street for Independencia since it run through the entire district as the main street. From here the Metropolitanos, main bus line to the city take of. All around Independencia a lot of moped-taxis exist, taking you where you need to go for 1 sol. The morning of November 17th in 1960, eighteen hundred families started building the district but where …
