how to save an overexposed shot – a photo of Norrbro/Riksbron, Stockholm

I have some issues with too strong sun. I admit it. Not everyone love backlight, or light at all. I prefer the soft morning or afternoon light and despise the middle of the day light. For photographic reasons of course. During the weekend my cousin was here visiting with his family and we took a walk from Gamla Stan to Sveavägen. To get there you  have to pass over a bridge and we walked along Vasabron. On Vasabron I shot this horrible shot of Norrbro, the bridge from the castle to the city centre. iso 100, f2.0, 1/1250 sek I´m not sure what I did, but I definitively didn´t get the settings right this time. The house walls are white, the water as well and the people is bathing in white white white. I didn´t think I was ever going to be able to do anything about this shot really. It just felt too white. how to save an overexposed image I was about to throw it away when I decided to edit it and …

Behind the scenes at a wedding photo workshop on Iceland – part two

Continuing on part one, Behind the scenes at a wedding workshop on Iceland – part one. Day 3 Hella, Geysir and Gullfoss Waking up me and my roomie Lisa head to breakfast and from the dinner you can spot some Icelandic horses eating grass peacefully. Some other girls shot some shots of them before we left in the morning. We then head out and meet up the bride and groom at Geysir, an area with an Icelandic Geisir that actually sprays water on a regular basis. This might have been the most difficult photos for me. Here there where so many tourists that is  was too difficult to shoot and I didn´t get much more than some over exposed shots with some smoke from the hot ground around the geiser. Going from Geisir to Gullfoss, a grand waterfall on Iceland, it was easier to shoot but still a lot of tourists. It wasn´t until we just stop next to the road that we got our first great photos with a mountain in the background in some and …

Taking care of your camera before and during a trip

I am not the best ”taking care of your equipment lady” and God knows I rather trow a way clothes than fix them if broken. But when it comes to the camera I think it is better to be safe than sorry, being organised and always bringing a cloth is important. I am now on my way to Island with a bunch of photographers accompanied by Emelie Ohlsson photographer/teacher. Here are some quick tips and everything you need to keep your camera clean before and during a trip: If you don´t have any, buy a good cleaning cloth. The ones used for glasses are the ultimate ones. Be careful and check so that you haven´t gotten any grains in your cloth before cleaning. Do not under any circumstances use chemicals in or on your camera if your not sure what you are doing. On the outside you can use chemicals in some cases, but I normally just use paper and a very small amount of cleaning alcohol that are used for hands, for example to clean the …

Venice – a quick guide including photo tips

Arriving in Venice the 27 degrees Celsius hits me in the face quite hard, even though it is only around 9.00 in the morning when the night train from Munich come rolling into the St. Luzia station at the Venice island. At first Martin and I almost disembark at the wrong station, Maestre, which also is Venice but main land. After a short stressful moment the island of Venice appear, and that is where we are going.        the SERVICE Even though we are not checking in to the hotel until 14, we head for the hotel Bargarin at Campo. S Marina. With sweat dripping everywhere, smelling, we drag our assess into the Italian hotel. The receptionist looking suspiciously at us. ”Name, please”. After giving the name the service start to flow and such much better service. The guy gives us water, breakfast and repeatedly say ”You room will not be ready before two” and we answer the same number of times ”We know, we just want to sit here”. After 20 minutes he …

Shoot better travel photographs – Mix color and black & white- the story about Paris

Who besides me love black and white photography?  I think it is something special with black and white photos and fill my Instagram account with them as well as the blog. Today we use photoshop to get photos black and white, something we before used film for. Today we have the possibility to cover the entire story when shooting, not just take one photo of the eiffeltower and leave out the rest of the city, when in Paris. We are either aware of what we are doing or we just do it, but normally we use technique that is called storytelling when putting our images together. A lot of us use it and tell the entire story of a travel destination without text, like a well filled photoalbum in one post. I like to do this all the time, I can add 40 photos from one day in one post here at the blog. To keep the story entertaining I like to mix color and black and white photos. Especially portraits do well in black …

Shoot better travel photographs- editing with your iPhone – the apps

This post is a indept on editing tools when abroad- for my overall guide check out ”Shoot better travel photographs” which have short tips for editing in the end. I think we can agree that when abroad we are fighting the clock and don´t have much time during the day to edit so we have to take shortcuts to be able to enjoy our stay as much as possible even though we like to update our social media forums on a regular basis. I spend as much time editing my photos abroad as other do reading the newspaper. I do it when I am back at the hotel, when others sleep. Since I am as tired as my traveling partners the editing can only take around 10 minutes tops. When abroad I bring my computer, which make editing quick and easy. I import the photos into folders and then into Lightroom. Next step is to develop one photo and copy the same settings to the rest and then export the photos and upload them to my …

Basic editing in Lightroom- Folders, importing, basic editing tools and exporting the photo

Lightroom is my favorite editing program since I got it last year. Photoshop is a great set of programs and Lightroom is the one that I love the most in the series. The other day a friend bought the lightroom program and asked me the important question on basics off handling your folders in this program. Off course, this friend is (an almost) professional on photoediting and does all her edits in Photoshop (the mother program). But Lightroom is an asset both for beginners and professionals and somewhat different from Photoshop. IT has a lot of the features that Photoshop has, is easier and handles editing several photos at a time with grace. All the editing program you need if you have to choose. I will show you my process of editing. Everyone does it differently and there are no rights and wrongs so use the tips you like, add some from other guides or loose some. It is your choice! This weekend have been all about editing, I have used both lightroom and photoshop for some photos and just …

Photoguide: Shooting with a polarising filter

We are all on the hunt for the perfect photo, with great contrast and saturated colors, right? It is basically possible, through a polarising filter. An old but sometimes forgotten best friend in the photography world. When I first bought my Canon I didn´t reflect much upon needing more equip than a camera, a lens and maybe a tripod. I put the camera on the ground and shot all my photos from a low angle, or just found ways to shot for me the perfect photo. When getting better on photography you realise that you have to have additional equipment to go further. This additional equipment cost money. Lots of lots of money. But there are always these cheaper stuff that makes a total difference. The polarising filter is one of those. Without a filter With filter   It is a big difference between the first and the second photo, don´t you think? Shooting in sunlight isn´t always easy. Adding a polarising filter makes a difference and keeps the colours of the sky and the …

Shoot better travel photographs – early morning shooting

See my first guide ”Shoot better travel photographs” for the basics of both shooting photos and shooting better travel photographs, including basic tips, preparing going out shooting, settings and for editing when abroad. This post is a continuation of that post and won´t go into basics. When in Borgå, me and Konsta Punkka, an amazing 20 year old photographer went out taking photos. It was his travel concept, when going abroad, he is an early bird, getting out of bed before the sun rises to get the most amazing shots. When 5-6 o´clock early morning Why There are several advantages of getting up early. – The early morning light is surely the best light, I think you agree, especially in combination with fog and long shutterspeed. But there are also other advantages, – as in cities: no traffic at five o´clock in the morning – some animals are early morning persons as well so you probably get more lucky catching them on camera. – you get a head. If you shoot from 5 o´clock until aroun …

Shoot better travel photographs.

For a long time I have been wanting to write something about photos. My Canon 5D Mark iii is my life, as you may know and I rarely write a post on the blog where I don´t add some photos relevant to what I am writing about. I´ve been in Peru for a while and reflected a lot on how to shoot better travel pics and wan´t to share my finds in an easy and understandable guide. Lets call it Shoot better travel photographs. It is of course useable for other stuff as well. Since this is a guide on how to shot better photographs, I assume that you already know your manual settings on your camera and where to find them, since i only know Canon models I won´t be to much help on where to find the different settings in your camera. If this becomes a problem in this guide, look at this ground course on aperture (bländare), shutterspead (slutartid), ISO-value and white balance (vit balans). Or just Google. There are thousands of …
