Editing roses in photoshop.

I´m no big user of photoshop but last night I decided to edit some.

My mother had brought home roses that where very beautiful, but had a lot of defects such as brown spots (see original picture one) and decided that this was an terrific time to start editing in photoshop.

For your knowledge I have Adobe Photoshop CC (creative cloud) in Swedish. I translated the best I could but the names might be different in the English versions.

My goal was to get rid of the spots on the roses and make the picture more attractive in general. I decided to go for a vintage-look since it is a popular editing technique for weddings nowadays. See final result in picture two.

This is how I did it step by step:

1. I adjusted the lighting in the picture a little in Bridge. This is how I have learned that it should be done but in the case of the roses I think that only photoshop would have been enough.

2. Then I opened the photo in mini bridge in photoshop and dropped through dragging. Normally I just use a baclground of size a4 so you know how big the picture becomes, but in this case I just dragged it and it worked fine.

3. I converted the object to a smart object in the panel where you handle the layers (right click and convert to smart object) and added two layers, layer 1 and layer 2 above the picture. Layers etc is renameable which is good if you edit a lot. The reason for more than one layer is because it makes is easier to correct mistakes. I used layer 1 for the editing of the brown spots and layer 2 for the painting of the entire picture.

4. Then I added adjustment layers for exposure, saturation and intensity.

5. I clicked on layer 1 and chose the ”pipette tool”. It is the tool that makes it possible to take a color sample from a part of the picture and use that color wherever you want.

6. I chose the brush tool and painted the part of the roses that had brown spots with color that fitted that part (found through using the pipette tool). After doing so I lost some texture on one of the leaves so I chose the clone with the possibility to clone patterns and added some pattern to the area that lost pattern and then painted that part again. I shifted to suitable transparency on the color so that the pattern would show.

7. I clicked on layer 2 and chosed the brush again, making the brush bigger and choosing a light color. Using much transparancy (maybe 5-10 % only) painting the entire picture with an extra focus on the back area of the picture. In this way you get the feeling of a shallow dept of field/ or enhance the already existing feeling.

8. Then I added a brown/orange photofilter.

Today a lot of people like the ”vintage editing” why I decided to show how simple it really is to do your own vintage feeling photos. Easy peasy! What do you think about the result?
