Around 1950s the migration from the countryside into Lima began, because of the emergence of the industry in the capital of Peru. From the need for own ground and houses, a community for residence where started which later also gave life to this district, Independencia.

There are four or five districts limiting to Independencia, Los Olivos, Comas, San Juan de Lurigancho, Rimac and a small area are limiting to San Martin de Porres. In Los Olivos, one of the Districts limiting to Independencia, a fruitmarket is being held where fruits, not so common in Sweden can be bought on a regular basis.

Avenue Tupac Amaru is an important street for Independencia since it run through the entire district as the main street. From here the Metropolitanos, main bus line to the city take of. All around Independencia a lot of moped-taxis exist, taking you where you need to go for 1 sol.

The morning of November 17th in 1960, eighteen hundred families started building the district but where evicted due to occupation of land. With some support from the right people the land later where given back to the occupants who then picked up where they started and continued the urbanization.

The name Tupac Amaru, originate from the last person in the royal Inka family that ever actually ruled his people. Tupac Amaru was executed by the Spanish invaders and with him, the last (realistic) hope of a returning Inka-rule died.

Today it lives about 250 000 persons in Independencia, an important part of Lima. There are many young people living in the area and the homepage of the district http://www.muniindependencia.gob.pe/states that involving people in democracy issues is of high importance to the district, that there is a lot of women’s sororities who played and play a key role in the development of Independencia and that the municipality are working with prevention of crime.

Talking to people who live in Independencia, they say that you have to be careful of where you go and that going out at night alone should be avoided. Not so different from the travelling tips you get from your embassy when going abroad to basically any country with a big income difference. The difference being that Peru in the 80´s and 90´s suffered from an economic collapse resulting in the emergence of two, now considered to be, terrorist groups called Sendero Luminoso (The Shining Path) and the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA), that sent Lima in to chaos.

The Industrial part of Independencia is called Northe Industrial Zone and attracts many visitors due to it´s shopping centers. There is three “centro de commercial”, shopping malls in Independencia, hosting everything from coffeshops to a iStore, the famous Apple shop. On the normal streets you find the small supermarkets that have little of everything. The shopping malls show a big contrast of building constructions from the more modest constructions of the houses in the living areas.

In the neighbourhood there is small parks, among those one called Parque Jan, where kids have played football for a long time. The old city centre, compared to the new centre where the newer municipality buildings and police have their headquarters, the old one hold playing ground for teenagers, kids and dogs. According to the municipality, around 70 percent of the population is of young age, explaining the activity and playfulness on the streets.
